We know that many patients arrive here after a long stretch of trying to piece things together — managing pain, navigating medications, coping with setbacks, or feeling like they have been passed from one system to another without a clear path forward. Our practice is built to offer something steadier: thoughtful care, honest communication, and treatment that takes the whole person into account.
WHAT WE DO
SISU Health Maine is a specialty practice in Portland focused on chronic pain medication management and addiction medicine support. We work with patients, families, and referring providers to help make sense of difficult situations and create a plan that is safe, practical, and grounded in real life.
Some patients come to us because pain has taken over too much of their daily life.
Others are trying to manage opioid use, taper medications safely, or find care that understands the overlap between pain and recovery.
Many are simply looking for a provider who will listen carefully, explain things clearly, and treat them with respect.
That is the kind of care we aim to provide.
OUR APROACH
At SISU Health we believe good care starts with trust. That means taking the time to listen, speaking plainly, and helping patients understand what is happening and what their options are.
Our approach is grounded in:
clear, respectful communication
practical treatment planning
evidence-based care
support that reflects each patient’s real circumstances, not just their chart
We know these situations are often complicated. Our goal is not to rush people through them. It is to help patients and families feel more informed, more supported, and better able to move forward.
DR. ANTHONY KOZMA, D.O.
Dr. Anthony Kozma is the physician behind SISU Health Maine. For more than 20 years, he has cared for patients navigating chronic pain, addiction, and the often complicated overlap between the two. His approach is rooted in clear communication, thoughtful treatment, and care that respects the whole person.
Dr. Kozma grew up in the Detroit area and studied biology and theater at Albion College in Michigan before earning his medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri. He completed his internship through Michigan State University and the Henry Ford Health System, then came to Maine for his family practice residency at the University of New England.
His focus on pain and addiction medicine began during residency, when he worked with Dr. Stanley Evans. Since then, his career has included work at Mercy Recovery Center, 13 years in outpatient practice with Dr. Evans, and service as Medical Director for Crooked River Counseling in Norway and South Paris, Maine. He is board certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine and has also served as an educational presenter on addiction-related topics.
Patients often appreciate Dr. Kozma’s direct, respectful style and his ability to explain complex situations in a way that feels clear and manageable. At SISU Health Maine, his goal is to provide experienced, steady care that helps patients better understand their options and move toward a safer, more stable path forward.
Outside of work, Dr. Kozma enjoys spending time outdoors and making the most of life in Maine. He especially enjoys camping up north, relaxing on his boat, and taking time to recharge in nature. That connection to the outdoors reflects the same grounded, steady presence he brings to his work with patients.

KIM QUINNEY, OFFICE MANAGER
KIM QUINNEY, OFFICE MANAGER
Kim Quinney is often the first person patients and providers connect with at Sisu Health. As Office Manager, she helps keep the office running smoothly and brings a calm, welcoming presence to every interaction. From answering questions to helping with scheduling and next steps, she makes it easier for people to get the support they need.
Kim is a big part of what makes Sisu Health feel approachable and well cared for behind the scenes. Her steady, thoughtful way of helping people sets the tone for the practice and helps patients feel comfortable from the very beginning.
SNOW, OFFICE MASCOT
Snow has been part of Sisu Health since 2016 and is a much-loved member of the team. She brings a sense of calm, comfort, and warmth to the office, whether she is greeting visitors, asking for a belly rub, or quietly sitting beside someone who could use a little extra company.
While Snow may not provide medical care, she plays an important role in making the office feel more relaxed and human. Her presence reflects something central to Sisu Health: that thoughtful care is not only about clinical expertise, but also about creating an environment where people feel at ease.
